I believe the "recovery loader" is how you do a forced update of the unit's software. With a forced update if you have an SD card with the unit's firmware (any version) it will install it. The normal way of doing a software update does not allow you to install a software version earlier than the one on the unit at that time. With a forced update, an earlier version (rollback) can be done if you have an SD card with that earlier version.
For your unit, version 10 software update included the anti-piracy (cannot authenticate message) for unlocked Vision maps (and possibly other non-Garmin maps).
