Garmin routing

I dont know if anyone can answer this, but here goes.
When creating a route using a zumo 660 or indeed any of the later models, there seems to be an inconsistancy, between units and maps and even software.

the problem is when i create a route using a waypoint as a start and end point, with many shaping points in between, and i then begin the route and then say i take a deveation from the route missing one of my shaping points, (if autorecalculation is set to on,) it then tries to route me back to the missed shaping point, (this is not a way point or an announced point it is a shaping point). I would have thought the unit should recalculate to the next point, and this is why i have this query, because looking at many posts from all around the internet on variouse forums, it appears that some get the recalculation back to a shaping point and others do not and the route recalculates to the next point.
Is there a simple explanation for this, or is it more complicated.
Please note that both my 660's recalculate me back to a shaping point, and yet a friend who uses the same version of mapsource with the same version of map sent me a route that he created using exactly the same method i use with all the same preference setting in mapsource and his route when a recalculation takes place routes me to the next point and not back to a missed one. i can not understand whats going on, anyone have any ideas.
