USB cable connecting Chinese GPS issue

I have a Chinese GPS, typical of most them that are effectively nameless, and it works great like all of mine have. This particular one is on my motorcycle. An increasing problem I have is getting the laptop to connect to it reliably by a cable, and has got to a point now where it just won't see it at all, which means I can no longer create routes on the laptop and copy them over to the IGO Primo directory structure. Worked great for a while. What increasingly happened is that the laptop would see the GPS as a USB device, then it wouldn't/would/wouldn't/would/wouldn't, looping around, sometimes settling down long enough for me to copy the route file over, and as at present, not at all.

Comes down I think to not having a suitable device driver for windows to recognise it as a USB device, even though it initially did. I tried Plan B which was to place a route file (.kml) on to a micro SD, and whilst the GPS knows the card is there, it is only set up to look for track files, not for kml files. So I'm wondering whether anyone has seen this issue and has any suggestions?
